02 / About

About the project.

Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin is driven by the pulse of the city: violent, relentless and constantly in motion. Marianna Venekei’s choreography brings that world into the present, following a young woman trapped inside a brutal urban underworld and the strange, almost supernatural connection that forms between her and the Mandarin.

We designed the animation as part of the dramaturgy from the very first seconds. The production does not begin with the city, but with silence: a mute solo danced by the Girl alone, set against a particle-system animation that evokes the addiction drawing her in. Before the narrative fully locks into place, the audience is already inside her altered inner state. From there, the visual language expands outward. The projected world and Gergely Zöldy Z’s raw, multi-level set operate as two layers of the same reality: one psychological and unstable, the other physical, hostile and inescapably urban.

The visual arc closes where it began. After the Mandarin’s death, the Girl is left alone for a final, catatonic solo as the animated city returns behind her. What first appeared as atmosphere gradually reveals itself as a force of its own, pulling her back into the world she briefly seemed capable of escaping. The animation does not simply frame the action; it opens the production through the Girl’s inner collapse, expands the architecture of the stage, and ultimately delivers its final image.
